Crystals, gems and minerals have been used on Earth for a very long time to achieve physical, emotional and spiritual balance. Almost every ancient civilization used healing crystals therefore, crystal healing has a colorful history as well.

Healing Crystals in the Prehistory

Jade has been mined in China since the Stone Age. Newgrange is a prehistoric monument in Ireland, that was built around 3200 B.C. making it older than Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids. The facade and the entrance of the passage tomb was made of white quartz cobblestones. Amber beads were discovered in Britain from 10,000 years ago.

Atlantis and Lemuria

Crystals were the source of power in the ancient civilizations of Lemuria and Atlantis. The Atlanteans developed patterns that created numerous forcefields of energy to serve a wide spectrum of needs. These people misused among others the crystal energy and it caused the disappearance of Atlantis.

Healing Crystals in the Ancient History

Ancient Egyptian Culture

The ancient Egyptians used a lot of different crystals. At a funeral, they put a quartz crystal and other gemstones on the dead’s forehead. They believed that the energy and spirit of these gems guide the dead safely into the afterlife.

Dancers wore carnelian and ruby crystals in their navels to increase their sex appeal. Royalties, like Cleopatra, used crushed lapis lazuli crystals upon the eyes to promote awareness. Pharaohs used amethyst gems to stimulate the third eye chakra and bring enlightenment.

They used a lot of turquoise, clear quartz, lapis lazuli, carnelian, ruby and emerald gems for jewelries and cosmetics. Egyptians used powdered rose quartz in cosmetics in the belief that it could prevent wrinkles.

Priests and Priestess of Egypt, who were healers as well, wore many gemstones on their bodies. These crystals recharged them with energy that they could transmit to the sick.

Mayas, Incas and Aztecs

The Mayans used green jade for funeral masks. Incas believed that rhodochrosite contained the blood of their ancestral rulers. The Aztecs warriors used obsidian made weapons.

Ancient Chinese Culture

In ancient Chinese culture green jade was a highly valued stone. Chinese used the energy of this crystal to attract love and prosperity. Even nowadays, we can find small statues about Goddess Quan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, in temples and souvenir shops. Jade has been the symbol of status, spirituality, purity and health for over 9,000 years.

Ancient Greek and Roman Culture

The word ‘crystal’ comes from the Greek word ‘krustullos’, which means ‘ice’. There is a myth of a young virgin, Amethyst. She became a victim of Dionysus.

The Greeks idolized Aries, the God of War. Since hematite contains iron, Greek soldiers rubbed crushed hematite over their bodies before they went into battle. They thought it could protect them against the enemy.

The Romans wore crystal amulets and talismans as a protection in battles, to enhance health and attract good things in life. Romans and Greeks wore amethyst crystal against drunkenness. Wine goblets were often carved of this stone.

The Vedas, sacred texts in Hinduism that are over 5,000 years old, documented the healing properties of crystals. The legendary Kalpa Tree in India, which represents an offering to the Gods, was composed of precious stones such as emerald, sapphire, coral, green zircon, ruby, cat’s eye, diamond and topaz.

Healing Crystals in the Middle Ages

In Christianity the lapis lazuli crystal symbolized the purity of the Virgin Mary. The cardinal’s ring is always a sapphire from the 12th century.

Europe, 10th-11th Century

In the Renaissance healing stones served as herbal remedies to heal the sick. Marbode, the Bishop of Rennes (France) documented his observations on the healing power of precious stones in his work ‘Lapidary’. It was only published in 1539 in Cologne.

The Aborigines

Gemstones and crystals have been important to Australia’s native inhabitants, the Aborigines. Quartz crystals are the most common one used. They use them to connect to the ancestor spirits. It is said that there is a cave beneath the Ayers Rock, Uluru, that holds a giant rock quartz crystal.

Crystal Healing in the Modern History

Gemstones and crystals became again more popular since the New Age in the ‘80s. However, crystal healing is one of the most common and yet not often discussed holistic therapies.

Jade stayed to be extremely important to China’s culture. There is even a Chinese proverb: “Gold has a price; jade is priceless.” Every athlete’s medal, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was embedded with a piece of pure nephrite jade.

Crystal Healing Nowadays

Crystals are all around us. Some authorities believe that nearly 33 % of the Earth’s surface is composed of minerals. The number of crystals in shops and books are growing every day. Crystals and crystal healing are often featured in magazines.

Crystals are used in watches, appliances, radios, televisions, computers and telecommunication equipment. Two of the best known qualities of quartz crystal are its piezoelectric effects and memory capacity in chips.

In the last century, medical science has made a huge progress but unfortunately it banned almost every aspects of natural healing from its toolkit for a very long time. Herbs were replaced by products of pharmaceutical industry which have most of the time a lot of side-effects.

Nowadays, more and more doctors support that the patient tries alternative methods as an addition to prescription drugs. Paramedical healing methods are not recognized by western medicine, although in many cases they might be more efficient.

A position of crystal healing is far from good. In our days, the healing with crystals are nary recognized. Doctors are not even open to consider the theories of the healing effects of the minerals, or to analyze if crystals have indeed some positive effects on the living organism.

The purpose is not to replace western medicine and popular therapies with the healing power of crystals. Although, to enhance the positive effects of western medicine, we should call upon those traditions for help that humanity has been used efficiently for thousands of years.

Many who questions the healing power of crystals claims that they only have an effect based on belief and feelings. According to the sceptics, crystals have magical power because their users think it that way.

The healing always works on more planes, but the first step is without doubt the soul’s plane. It’s not enough to treat the disease only on the physical plane, because in this case we would treat only the symptoms. The roots of the disease should be sought in the soul in order to have a permanent recovery.

Crystal energy might play a crucial part in the Crystal Age of Aquarius. This new energy is the Crystal-Field-Force.
